What are Sustainable Development Goals?

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs or SDGs) are 17 goals that lie at the heart of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The agenda was adopted during a United Nations Summit in 2015, after UN member-states' leaders came together to map out a secure future for generations, based on promises of well-being, freedom from conflict and fear, protection of human rights, and environmental protection - in short, promises of sustainable development.

The term Sustainable Development in itself refers to some form of balance; that between our needs within our ways of life, and the need to be aware of limitations we may face as a society. It is becoming increasingly important with the growing awareness of scarcity, especially that of resources, thus imposing itself as a crucial consideration for future generations. It's focus is primarily centered on three aspects: economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection.
10 years after their establishment, it is those goals that we aim to foster a discussion on here at Polaris—whether it be to track progress, point out local efforts or highlight local and global pitfalls.
